Marvel Presents: The Avengers
Yes. Its The Avengers! The massive action-packed, valiant superhero movie ever to hit the big screen. The all-in-one combined extra-ordinary vibrant beings solidified to fight the malevolence and atrocity-causing deeds of their demi-god nemesis we ordinary mammals can't handle.
Okay. So here I go.
When you imply the sociological lens in watching the film, here's what you can grasp:
(These are just general, easy to swallow sociological insights)
Social Stratification.
The meaning lies beneath the word 'superhero' already delivers one major sociological note - social stratification does exists. Why? For the apparent reason that somebody has to trail blaze; somebody has to step-up; somebody has to be on the top; somebody has to establish leadership which not everybody is capable and more than that, have the guts to do so. Of course if you have the power, then why not be accountable for those who are powerless? Fortunately given the phenomenon, the populace heartily accept it 100% cause it's for everybody's well-being.
Patriarchal Society.
If you'll notice, only 'Black Widow" is the female character on the aggregated group. Not quite agitating for Feminists, but quite noticing. This instance can be attributed on the established norm and given status-quo that our world is dominated by patriarchal society; that men overrule women. It manifests the thought that men are naturally-born leaders more in terms of physical aspect thus, highlighting machismo.
Symbolic Interactionism.
Symbolically, each of them have trademarks for them to be fully-known and uniquely identified. I regarded symbols as tangible given objects as well as the appearances which magnify the character of the avengers. For Captain America (metal shield), Ironman (iron suit), Thor (hammer), Halk eye (bow & arrow) and Hulk (his greeny-angry monstrous physique). As in the case of Agent Romanov (Black Widow), she has to rely solely on her humble pistols aside from her beauty and fighting flawlessness skills.
Functionalism.
There are two kinds of functions namely: (1) Manifest and (2) Latent. Simplifying the terms, manifest functions are those that are intended while latent functions are unintended or the aftermath of those actions that were unconsciously made. Manifestly speaking, the mighty team serves as protectors of the earth and the whole mankind. Everybody knows it. It is given. On the other hand, I'm identifying the latent by saying that their heroic actions are being seen as actions that are worth emulating. As seen in the last part of the movie, they've become icons of heroism & patriotism which none of them intends to become, especially for the kids.
Sociologically yours,
